Book Testimonials What Our Readers Say
Incredibly Readable
Incredibly Readable! So says Sheila Kennedy, in her blog, where she provided a review of my book.
“Shaffer and Barth have done a fantastic job. They have anchored their guidebook in the importance of three things: civility, clarity and communication. They explain why and how to properly define the problem–it isn’t always what it seems. They also stress the importance of identifying who actually has the authority to solve a particular problem. (Sometimes, as Indianapolis folks know all too well, local government lacks that authority.)They lay out the process for contacting those authorities, making one’s case, and achieving a result, and they do it with easy to understand examples and definitions. They provide a “toolbox,” explain how local government works, define arcane terminology, provide lists of resources–and do it all in less than 100 pages, in an incredibly readable book.”
It can be ordered through Lisa’s webpage, and I enthusiastically endorse it.
‘Potholes, Parks, and Politics’ provides a rundown of city government employees and what they do.
“In a newly released book, “Potholes, Parks, and Politics,” Shaffer distills her knowledge and experience from the council into a guide that equips residents with the know-how to make a bigger difference in their communities.
‘Potholes, Parks, and Politics’ provides a rundown of city government employees and what they do, tells readers about the amount of information they can acquire from a quick call to the city clerk, and includes templates of letters that residents can use to reach out to their council members. The book, which is not limited to any particular city or state, focuses on local government, such as city council, county board, school district, or other local entities.”
Written in layman’s terms for easy reading.
Written in layman’s terms for easy reading, the book is divided into three sections, including a how-to guide on taking action, basic civics lessons and a “toolbox” section with templates and tools for activists. “This book isn’t just about Encinitas politics,” Shaffer said. “This is applicable for any local government and a lot of it is common sense.”
“Shaffer walks readers through the step-by-step process of working through each issue, defining the problem, identifying the players and rules, working with the city, putting concepts into action, building the case and going public.”

The “Toolbox” is really great.
“Dear Lisa, love the book! It is chocked full of good, I guess I could say basic, information. Congratulations on being able to include so much in such a small book, Excellent work! … The “Toolbox” is really great, particularly those sections which point the reader to specific resources. In other words, EXCELLENT”
Straightforward information, concise and sprinkled with humor.
It is about time! Having worked in local government for decades, I have seen many frustrated people who cannot figure out how to get something fixed in their community. Ms. Shaffer lays out straightforward information, concise and sprinkled with humor, that is what everyone needs to know to clarify their concern, figure out who has responsibility to fix it, and get the job done. This should be at the reference desk of every library and available in every City Hall.
Page turner!
Such a great read! Page turner! But now that I’m almost done, I don’t want it to end!

It takes courage to step up.
Thanks for writing that book, Lisa. If I become an activist, I’ll know what to do! It takes courage to step up and try to help others (like you do) beyond writing a check.
